The idea and serviceability of a trench coat may never go out of style, but the cut, look and, maybe (gulp!) even color sure does. Our “Dressing” expert Domenica keeps us au courant…

Having long been a fashion staple since introduced by Burberry in 1901 – the trench coat still occupies its own impenetrable niche in fashion.

This season, shorter lengths and lighter fabrics give the trench a contemporary feel, and designers have embraced color, giving some kick to an age-old design – mysterious by definition with a drama all its own.

Wear them day or night. This season’s evening trench in taffeta is an elegant way to finish off a cocktail look – turn that face framing collar up – cinch that belt and don’t forget the heels.

If you are daring and opt for the red trench in this season’s patent leather variety, be sure to work the playful color with a subdued co-ordinate. With such a large display of color, you want the rest of your outfit to complement rather than compete.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with the classic, which can be paired with anything from day dresses, suits or just jeans and a t-shirt.

So don’t forget the trench and don’t just save it for a rainy day!
