THANKS FOR VOTING!Â
What I learned (and sometimes re-learned) working on the ground in Ohio …
•  People of every age, color, religion, region, and income level will work tirelessly, happily and with great spirit together …
•  Volunteers will not only work for free, but pay their own way to work for someone else …
•  You really can be wrong when you have preconceptions about someone else …
•  There are people who still use the “N” word (prefaced by G–D—) …
•  Never go into a fenced-in area without checking to see if there’s a dog there first …
•  A 5′ tall white person wearing an Obama button and walking in an all African-American neighborhood can feel not just safe, but loved …
•  There are single moms with two jobs, two adopted disabled kids, and a very clean bathroom who — even when they’re away working — leave their house wide open to strangers sharing their cause…
•  The phrase “towel head” is actively used in some quarters …
•  People will vote against their own best interests …
•  There are busy people who have families and work full-time but still find a way to cook lunches and dinners that they deliver on their way to somewhere else …
•  There are many many many poor, under-educated, unhealthy, disheartened people in this country who remain hopeful … and also many others who aren’t …
•  America may be huge, but it is a place where you can (miraculously) make change by going call-to-call, door-to-door, person-to-person …
•  A smile and good humor are very disarming weapons …
•  I am an incredibly lucky person … and, if you’re reading this message, probably so are you …
With great affection,
Harriett
